WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (JANUARY 26, 2017) – John Babcock and Karen Wilson, partners at the law firm of Wall Babcock have been named 2017 Legal Elite by Business North Carolina magazine. Babcock received the distinction in the business category and Wilson in the area of tax/estate planning.
Since 2002, Business North Carolina magazine has honored Tar Heel lawyers by publishing Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite, a listing of the state’s top lawyers in business-related categories. Winners are chosen not by the magazine’s editors but by the state’s lawyers. Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite has become the model for other awards and lists, yet it remains unique as the only award that gives every active lawyer in the state the opportunity to participate. Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite includes the top lawyers chosen using this statewide ballot.
Each year, Business North Carolina sends ballot notices to every member of the North Carolina State Bar living in North Carolina—asking each a simple question: Of the Tar Heel lawyers whose work you have observed firsthand, whom would you rate among the current best in these categories? Voters are not allowed to vote for themselves. They may select members of their firms only if they pick out-of-firm lawyers in the same categories, with the latter votes weighted more heavily. The top vote-getter in each category becomes a member of Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame and is ineligible to win again.
Babcock has extensive experience in corporate, tax and securities law matters, mergers and acquisitions and commercial business transactions. He represents clients regarding all aspects of entity formation, debt and private equity financing, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and commercial business transactions. He also devotes a significant portion of his time advising clients on a wide range of tax matters, including partnership and S corporation tax issues.
Babcock serves as an adjunct professor of law at Wake Forest University, where he has taught or presently teaches courses in business planning, partnership taxation and corporate taxation. He has also presented at several seminars on topics covering choice of entity, shareholders’ agreements, and mergers and acquisitions. He serves as a council member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Business Law Section and is a past Secretary and Treasurer of the Business Law Section. Babcock is also a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, in the tax and business law sections, and a member of the American Bar Association’s Business Law Section.
He graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1982, with distinction, with a bachelor of science in administration. He received his J.D. in 1985 from Wake Forest University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1987. Babcock has been recognized as a member of the Legal Elite in past years and continues to be included in The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers.
Wilson’s practice focuses on estate planning, estate administration, corporate and tax law. She also is a Certified Public Accountant. She is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Tax and Estate Planning Sections, and is a member of the Forsyth County Bar Association. Wilson also is a member of the Winston-Salem Estate Planning Council and has served multiple terms on its board of trustees and as its treasurer. She also has served multiple terms on the Wake Forest University Planned Giving Council.
Wilson received a J.D. degree cum laude from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1985 and a B.S. degree, also from Wake Forest University, in 1982. She has served as an Adjunct Professor at the Wake Forest University Babcock School of Management, where she taught “Federal Taxes and Management Decisions” to M.B.A. students.
An experienced speaker and author, Wilson’s speaking topics have included “Children & Taxes” (North Carolina Bar Association Family Law Intensive Seminar on Bedded and Imbedded Taxes), “Marital Deduction Trusts and Uniform Transfers to Minors Act” (Wake Forest University School of Law CLE), “North Carolina Intangible Personal Property Tax” (Lorman Educational Services Seminars) and “Tax Aspects of Buy-Sell Agreements” (Law and Accountants Seminar). She co-authored North Carolina Limited Liability Company Forms and Practice Manual for Data Trace Legal Publishers and Corporate and Income Tax and Franchise Tax Summaries for Prentice Hall’s North Carolina State and Local Tax Service.
